What is National Donut Day?

National Donut Day is celebrated annually on the first Friday of June, commemorating a delightful tradition that dates back to 1917. The holiday finds its roots in the efforts of The Salvation Army during World War I, when the organization's dedicated volunteers, known as "Donut Lassies," provided comfort and support to American soldiers on the frontlines in Europe.

The Donut Lassies served the troops home-cooked meals and baked goods, with donuts becoming an instant favorite. These tasty treats not only satisfied their hunger but also lifted their spirits. As a symbol of gratitude and camaraderie, The Salvation Army continued the tradition by establishing National Donut Day in 1938, honoring their volunteers and raising funds for those in need.

Today, National Donut Day serves as a reminder of the selfless service of the Donut Lassies and the continued mission of The Salvation Army to provide hope and assistance to communities across the nation. So, every time you enjoy a donut on this special day, you're also celebrating the rich history and enduring impact of this remarkable organization.
